Adult Jazz, featured here a month ago, is exciting.
For any music fans struggling to find new acts, new sounds, and new approaches to popular music, Leeds-based band Adult Jazz might just be what you're looking for.
Their album, Gist Is, released on August 4, received generally good reviews, with critics praising their ambition and versatility. To fully understand how many genres they jump through and explore with consummate ease, you would need to listen to the full album. However, "Springful" is as good a place as any to begin your education.
Opening with just drums and Harry Burgess's chameleonic vocals, there are hints of early R&B, offering a slow groove to chew over. As with many of the tracks on the album, however, it develops; Foals-esque guitar arpeggios emerge to give the track a new perspective.
Despite the constant flitting about and change, it's a smooth song that will make you smile. When a wildly new element is brought into the song, such as the shimmering electronic effects that welcome in the chorus, it's truly hard not to crack a grin. The little details make it constantly interesting.
Compared to the rest of the album, "Springful" is fairly conventional in terms of structure, so this is a good test of whether Adult Jazz will be for you or not. However, there is so much going on that it is likely you will find something within the five minutes to enjoy.
Adult Jazz has only just got going, but there's so much to love in their first offering that you have no idea where they'll go next.
