90's stalwarts Stereolab made their mark partly due to the way Laetitia Saddier's vocals complemented and contrasted the experimental pop vibes of the English band.
Adrian Younge, a rising star producer and musician ushering a new wave of retro-feel music, plucks that singular voice from its former element to push towards something new. "Memories of War" is a track from a forthcoming Linear Labs compilation, the label is the home and brainchild of Younge.
The song aims to match its dramatic title. Younge's sparse arrangement of keyboard and staccato drums create an atmosphere of bleakness and despair, particularly when partnered with Saddier's pristine vocals. Think Morricone or Axelrod, boiled down to it's most palatable basics.
It's exciting to see this kind of experimentation on a sizeable platform. Though he's already been sampled by Jay-Z and Premiere, 2015 may be Younge's strongest year yet.
