"Girls Do" is my first introduction with UK indie trio Actor, and I have to say I'm totally on board. Fronted by multi-instrumentalist Louisa Osborn, collaborating with producer Chris Mulligan and drummer Set Anderson, Actor is a joyous listening experience.
Having gained exposure with a rash of releases last year, "Girls Do" is Actor's rousing take down on sexism expressed via a blend of rhythmic indie pop and Osborn's manipulated vocals.
Here's what Actor had to say about the songs themes and meaning:
"'Girls Do' was written in part out of frustration. If you're a sexy woman that stands on a stage wearing a full PVC skin clinging body suit, then you can be sexualized and treated as an object. If you're a sexy woman that wears an XL band tee and a pair of jeans, then you're sexualized and treated as an object."
"It's just about doing whatever the fuck you want," she added. "If you want to wear lipstick on your teeth instead of your lips because you can't do it right and don't feel like being like everyone else, then that's fine. If you want to walk on stage with a see-through top on because YOU think it looks good, then that's fine too.”
We couldn't agree more.
