Another 90s throwback, remixed. This one really caught my ear with its soulful groove and that slow down at 2:41.
Go Yama breathes new life into Aaliyah's hit "If Your Girl Only Knew," released in 1996 as the lead single of her second studio album One in a Million. Written by Timbaland and Missy Elliot, the original is one of the earliest showcases of Timbaland's production talent, and if his signature sound is a blend of hip-hop and R&B, Go Yama's is a blend of that plus jazzy electronic beats.
Go Yama is the moniker of San Diego-based producer "Scooter" Oyama. With over 70 tracks posted on SoundCloud, two self-released LPs, and two remix albums, Go Yama is impressive. He released this remix of "If Your Girl Only Knew" on the Reflipmix Vol.1 album in September 2013, followed by a tribute album to filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki via label/collective Darker Than Wax titled Glimpses From The Spirit Plane in February this year, which is also worth a listen.
I'll be keeping Go Yama on my must-watch list. We can only expect even better tracks as he continues to refine his sound!
