I was thinking about music yesterday. Well, every day actually, but yesterday a new concept emerged for me. It had to do with what draws us to a certain song. We hear sounds that we associate with certain genres or times, and based on our sense of identity, we draw it in as something we like or feel aversion towards it if it doesn't proliferate that which falls within our sphere of identity.
Big fan of Britney Spears? Certain pop sounds that hark back to the 90s will influence you to like a song. Viscerally dislike the 2000s pop-punk scene? You guessed it — sounds that you associate with that genre will put you off a song.
Personally, as someone who questions reality and concludes my sense of identity around that, I'm a fan of songs with metaphysical or abstract lyricism. A Beacon School's "Dot" does just this and so, of course, I find myself liking it. Speaking to the track, this New York-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist explains:
“'Dot' is a song about seeing patterns in your life emerge but feeling helpless to change them. The song oscillates between these moments of unfiltered wonder and inspiration, and the immediate skepticism that follows them."
"Dot" marks the first release from the artist in 3 years, and if this signals a new full-length album, you bet I'll have my eyes glued to the horizon awaiting what's to come.
