So we've got 9th Wonder, who turns soul into hip hop. Then we've got Ollie Macfarlane, who turns whatever he's given into a rather unique form of garage. What happens when Ollie Macfarlane takes on 9th Wonder? We get the first song to go from soul to hip hop to garage. Is it soulrage? Garoul? I don't really know. But it sounds pretty awesome!
9th Wonder is the only producer out there who really comes anywhere close to the legend that is J Dilla. I first heard this beat when it was sampled by Hodgy Beats for "Alright" - which is today's bonus track. Have a look at this review if you're into Hodgy Beats.
Anyway, as we'd expect from Hodgy Beats, the sample was pretty awesome, and so I did some research and figured out (via Wikipedia) that it was from "It's Alright," a version by Jay-Z associate Memphis Bleek (who is also worth checking out). I liked the instrumental enough to download it, and it's good enough to listen to on it's own without getting boring. Later, I was talking to Ollie and I suggested that he play around with it. That he did, and this remix is what we have.
His remix is an absolutely unique take on the sample, and I have to say I love it. It takes just the right amount from the original and and adds just the right amount of new ingredients. You can dance to it, and you can chill to it. As the trumpets stab down over the quietly rumbling bass, my ears feel a little more than "Alright"!
