77:78 marks the return of Aaron Fletcher and Tim Parkin of the Mercury Prize nominated band, The Bees. Their upcoming album, Jellies, promises a psychedelic indie-pop ride through the eight years of songwriting that separate these two projects.
“Chilli,” the latest release off of Jellies, sounds like Parquet Courts on a Hawaiian vacation. All surf rock guitars and staccato synths, the track is a retro trip back to the era of The Beach Boys, but with a serrated edge. While less aggressive than other recent surfer attempts by bands like The Vaccines or The Drums, 77:78 still deliver an excellent rock breakdown at the end of the track, complete with maxed-out vocal reverb and a rousing chorus of brass.
This is the type of track I would let rejuvenate me in the sun after crawling out of my festival tent on a Sunday morning.
