What a time to be alive: two immense collaborative tracks between hip-hop and electronic artists in one week? Is it my birthday already?
Earlier this week we enjoyed the immense combination of Glass Animals and Joey Bada$$. Now, mysterious LA producer ZHU has enlisted hip-hop legends Bone Thugs-N-Harmony for the bouncy, trumpet-laden "Hold Up Wait A Minute." It follows on from AlunaGeorge-featuring "Automatic" (which we boldly proclaimed was the song of the century) and two other collabs with A-Trak and Gallant, all of which are phenomenal glimpses into ZHU's cryptic new project Genesis Series.
It's a wonderful and perfectly balanced blend of their two unique, entirely different styles. On the one hand you've got ZHU, and the flitting, spritely top-heavy beats that thrust him into the spotlight with his debut EP The Nightday last year. Then you've got the instantly recognizable Bone Thugs flow, hard-hitting but still playful, couple with a trumpet hook and a swift, but still understated bass.
This is my favorite song from him yet, and am incredibly excited for ZHU's new release. Every new track we've heard so far has ventured out into its own direction, from electro-pop to reggae to soul, and now hip-hop. I'd been wondering what route ZHU would take his sound following his first EP, and it looks like he decided to take them all.
