Why do we like this?
Southern hummingbird Tweet first burst onto the scene unconventionally back in 2002 with the Timbaland-produced "Oops (Oh My)," a bold declaration of self-love. She had spent the previous years singing back-up for Missy Elliot and a host of other popular acts at the time, but this was her biggest solo break to date. Southern Hummingbird the album was certified gold, and it seemed after years of struggle, Tweet had finally solidified a career.
Unfortunately things got a bit complicated; the classic label drama prevented her second album Its Me Again from achieving the proper visibility needed to capitalize on the momentum she'd built and her public image began to wane. But she's back! She recently announced that her delayed third album, Simply Tweet, will now be released as an EP through Duboce Music Group, a label started by MC Lyte.
"Enough" is the first taste from it, and it's fucking fantastic. Tweet was always able to infuse her songs with a sense of candor that never felt tacky. The production on the track is timeless; the song could easily be from a session in the early 2000s, but it doesn't sound dated. This earnest sound is personally refreshing in a sea of xerox EDM-style arena ballads and overproduced vocals. And no, the singer is not trying to be ironic -- Tweet had her name before Twitter.
