Since a new Bon Iver song appeared recently, interest is again rising for everything Justin Vernon related. It seems appropriate, then, to revisit some of Vernon's lesser known gems. The Shouting Matches may have passed under the radar in comparison to some of Vernon's other bands, but they are certainly worth a listen.
In contrast to the intricate, low key music that has wowed listeners for the past few years, The Shouting Matches produce uncomplicated gospel rock. It isn't the kind of groundbreaking music that the likes of Bon Iver is renowned for, but it's catchy, and perfect to listen to in summer weather.
Released last year, "Seven Sisters" is a short showcase of what The Shouting Matches can do. With a blues rock lick that will sound familiar and a concise, memorable melody, "Seven Sisters" is constructed perfectly. This level of craft cannot be underestimated.
Vernon's vocals, which so often can be found in a much higher register, take a break from the falsetto to belt out a growling rock vocal. Again, it takes control of the song, fits perfectly within its genre, and is pleasing on the ear. The whole track is produced brilliantly, with a fuzzy feel and a perfect sonic balance, landing just right on the ears, with nothing out of place.
The Shouting Matches will never be more than a side project for Justin Vernon; the music created here will never be given the same glowing praise as the wondrous sound he creates with other bands. However, with The Shouting Matches, he has found a simple rock band who has got it just right.
