The story of Brooklyn-based band The Mast reminds me a good bit of The Postal Service. The duo is made up of female vocalist Haleh Gafori and producer Matt Kilmer.
Kilmer has done work with the likes of Louis CK, Lauryn Hill, David Byrne, Reggie Watts, and a whole lot more. And while he's clearly a pretty busy dude, he's managed to lay down some excellent instrumentals and beats.
That's where Haleh, a poet who finds herself constantly traveling, comes into the picture. When Kilmer sent her music, she'd lay down lyrics, melodies and arrangements, sending the final product back for mastering.
The end collaboration is an album titled
Pleasure Island (due January 28th). "Luxor" is the third single off the album, which can be pre-ordered / streamed
via Bandcamp. It fuses elements of drum and bass with catchy electro pop, for a formula that reminds me a whole lot of RÃœFÃœS.
If you dig it, be sure to keep in the loop by following the band on their
various social networks.
