Auckland-based producer SoulChef dropped his new LP Good Vibes on October 3, and we've been given the opportunity to premiere one of the singles. (The track was so dope that I got in touch with Délicieuse Records so I could share it with you guys!)
Since the release of his first album Remember When...in 2010, SoulChef has won the heart of many old school hip-hop lovers, masterfully blending jazz, soul, and boom-bap hip-hop. He knows how to surround himself with the best rising/underrated emcees, and Good Vibes testifies to this -- you will find guest appearances from the likes of Awon, Nieve, Akin Yai, and even Mello Music Group's Declaime.
About this particular track, the Kiwi producer says:
"This was my first approach at incorporating samples from the doo wop style of music into one of my tracks. Layering several different vocal harmony chops accompanied by a simple bassline and boom-bap style drums reminiscent of the mid-90’s era of hip-hop creating an evocative yet still modern feel. The vocals on this track were supplied by lyricist Akin Yai, who I connected with via Délicieuse Records."
You can download the LP via Délicieuse Records' Bandcamp here. Make sure to check "For My People (feat. Awon)". It's definitely worth a listen, too.
