Hip-hop has never been in more thoughtful hands. At a time when the bloggers and the indie kids intertwine with young up-and-comers in all arenas, the influences of everyone are bleeding into each others' art. This is the case with Seba Yuri's work: a young producer in D.C. whose work is incredibly reflective of the scene he's coming up in and is carefully plotted with each bar.
Painstakingly different in a young community that seems to hone in on "cute internet music," Seba Yuri draws from his place as a wallflower. "For You," his latest work, is a symbol of that as it looks onward patiently riding on the sleepy wings of keys and idyllic guitar licks. On the verses are rapper Lyrx who slips edgy rhymes between the cracks like a stream slips through lines in the pavement with the articulation of a young Eminem.
"For You" is self-aware of the fact that it looks to niche harmonies and cultured samples and will cater to a young crowd seeking something rich and counter to the majority of current hip-hop. After all, it was fargely inspired by the late Nujabes - a producer whose work thrived on the intellectual side of a bygone era in rap and beat making. This doesn't keep it from being unique and, ultimately, a breathtaking sample of what could come from the young producer in question.
