Why do we like this?
London producer SBTRKT blew onto the scene this year in a major way. After a smattering of EPs, SBTRKT dropped a self-titled LP a few months ago which absolutely melted the airwaves with monstrous sound from this reclusive, eclectic mask-wearing musician. In addition to the not-yet-abated success of SBTRKT, the artist just completed a banger of an Essential Mix for BBC's Radio 1.
Calling on inspiration from UK garage, New York house, and others, the Essential Mix is, in the most rudimentary words, fucking awesome. It includes original works and remixes from Hudson Mohawke, Joy O, Radiohead, Flying Lotus, Deadboy, Jacques Greene, and D'Angelo. I shit you not on that last one.
The mix also features a new and unreleased track called "Runaway" by SBTRKT. It's housey, loungey, and post-dubsteppy all wrapped up into one. A staccato melody starts off the track, traipsing through a series of metamorphic instrument changes; all this leads to a woman's dulcet tones looping at the end while retaining the same theme and tone throughout. It's chill but not singularly-faceted as to disinterest the listener.
A Radio 1 advert makes an appearance in the middle, but "Runaway" is still a quality track. No word or consensus on if this will be released under any official jacket, so for now we shall embrace the rip we have.
SBTRKT is in the middle of a world tour right now, and will be embarking on the US portion in my very monochromatic residence, Seattle. For actual tour dates, check here.
