Why do we like this?
Samiyam came up under the Brainfeeder umbrella, but the Los Angeles by way of Michigan producer is a sore thumb in the collective. Among electronic giants like Flying Lotus and GLK, musicians like Thundercat and Austin Peralta (RIP), Sam stands out with production rooted in 90s hip-hop. The closest musical relative in the camp is probably Ras_G's speaker-blowing bass and loops.
Time has passed since Sam's arrival on the scene in the late 2000s, and his music has grown more and more straightforward. After a quiet few years since his 2011 Brainfeeder full-length debut, Sam Baker's Album, Sam is back!
Wish You Were Here is a smoldering 16-track album of mostly instrumental offerings with a few rap songs added on. Here, Sam seems more confident in his sound and secure in his direction. In fact, he's so confident, he's rapping on a few tracks! But this is no vanity project; Sam is no slouch on the mic, as he takes cues from other producers who rap like Alchemist and Roc Marciano. Also, the project's artwork is very serious and deep.
"Snakes On The Moon" is the first leak from the album, and if you don't have a decent sound system or headphones you should just put your genitalia in your laptop and slam it shut because you will completely miss the point of this delectably titled banger.
