There aren't many artists that I have as much love for as I have for Prince. So it goes without saying that I’m particularly wary and suspicious when it comes to Prince covers, remixes, reworks, and so on.
I've spent a lot of time thinking about the merits and shortfalls of covers and remixes, but one of my fundamental personal guidelines for a good cover is that it should almost always sound totally different to the original -- especially when it comes to super famous tracks. Why remake something that sounds the same, but is inevitably weaker than the original?
Australian R&B artist James Chatburn, who I recently posted about here, has released a gorgeous and really unique version of 1983 single “Little Red Corvette.” He's taken a classic, instantly recognizable track and turned it into his own thing, rather than trying to manipulate his own sound to be more like that of The Purple One. And that's exactly how songs should be covered.
