Take Pink Mountaintops and White Lung, mash them together, and you get Pink Lung, a collaboration that almost seems too damn good to be true.
And, in a way, it is, considering the partnership is likely just a one-off between the two Canadian bands who penned the original single "Chinese Watermelon" specifically for the third Converse CONS music compilation, CONS EP Vol. 3.
The track starts off slow, biding its time as the duel vocals of Pink Mountaintops' Stephen McBean and White Lung's Mish Way sing over a slow thumping kick drum. But with howling feedback and sporadic licks lingering in the back, you know it's only a matter of time before things get real noisy.
Three quick hits to the hi-hat a little before the minute mark and the band really picks up the pace, escalating with rapidly-strummed chords and a punishing bass that relentlessly pummels the song from start to finish. Had White Lung written "Chinese Watermelon" with McBean's ferocious punk project Obliterations, chances are it would've turned out far meaner and aggressive than what we've already got. But there's plenty of fury dished out here, especially in the final seconds as Way and a shrilling guitar tears into an outro that'll leave you hungry for more by the end.
