I’ve recently been trying to find my footing within the realm of trip hop. It’s not an easy task, my fellow music fans. It’s a daunting endeavor for a girl who goes weak in the knees for sugar-coated shoegaze and synth-pop. I’m not comfortable in this strange experimental landscape.
Still, my quiet quest continues.
I’ve started unearthing indie acts covering the likes of Massive Attack and the whimsical, wondrous Bjork to start. It wasn’t long before I dusted off this track by Minnesota’s ON AN ON.
The universe clearly has a sense of humor, because I was introduced in-person to this indie rock trio by Indie Shuffle. On a dreary night in March, Indie Shuffle and Roll Call Records secured a bar on Rainey Street for SXSW. It was here that I was treated to the sounds of ON AN ON. It feels right to spotlight them today.
The song’s severe, intended slowness has been preserved. There’s no avant-garde video to accompany these words. No wild colors to distract your attention. I have to focus my senses as it was intended.
Listening to both versions, I feel ON AN ON adds a gritty, darker tale to these lovesick lyrics. I hear Cursive, and my 14-year-old heart stops. This song is the forgotten sister to “The Recluse.” A compliment, I assure you.
I’ll keep listening, and I hope you do too. There’s more to this band, and this genre, than meets the ear. We haven’t even scratched the surface.
