During Vince Staples performance at SXSW's Spotify House earlier today, the Long beach rapper took time out during the middle of his set to blast the streaming service. The enigmatic, often reserved spitter ripped Spotify for not fairly compensating artists for their music, saying:

“Shout out to Spotify. Thank you for giving me this check to make up for what you’ve done to me and all my musical friends,”

“listen to your favorite album 1000, 2000 times so everybody can get an album sale.”

Vince has never been one to hold his tongue, infamously stating in a Time interview last November:

“The ’90s get a lot of credit. I don’t really know why. Biggie and Tupac, those are the staples of the ’90s. That’s why they get the Golden Era credit. There’s not a 50 Cent in the ’90s. They didn’t even have a Kanye.

In both cases it seems Staples has a point, as Spotify reportedly only pays out about a quarter of a penny per stream. It's refreshing to see an artist use their platform to speak out, especially one as talented as Vince, whose Summertime '06 was one of the better albums of 2015.

If you're not hip yet, now is a good chance to get acquainted, and please, let's start paying our artists what they deserve.

H/T to Austin 360 for the original story.
