A tribute concert to David Bowie was announced just hours before his death yesterday. Set to take place on March 31st at Carnegie Hall in New York City, The Roots, Cyndi Lauper, Jane's Addiction's Perry Farrell, the Mountain Goats, Ann Wilson (Hearts) and Jakob Dylan were to pay tribute to the legendary musician.
In the wake of his death, organizers have announced that the concert is still taking place, but will now be a memorial concert as opposed to a tribute.
Yesterday, David Bowie passed away yesterday at age sixty-nine. Unbeknownst to the public, it was the end of an eighteen-month battle with cancer. His death falls only days since his birthday, and the release of his twenty-fifth and final ever album, Blackstar.
As reported by Rolling Stone, event organizers announced the change on their official website: "The unexpected death of David Bowie has made this tribute to him into a memorial concert. While the series has had the surprise appearances and performances of the honoree several times in the past, this one will certainly become a poignant honor of his music by his friends, peers, and fans. We are all deeply saddened at this news, the timing of our public on-sale bizarre in its timing, and the show is taking on many more emotions. RIP David and may gods love be with you..."
More artists are now expected to be announced for the March 31 memorial.
