Apple Music looks set to take a serious bite out of popular music streaming services Spotify and Pandora, latest statistics reveal.
Apple executives Craig Federighi and Eddie Cue confirmed a Financial Times report from January that claimed Apple Music had accumulated 10 million subscribers since the its launch in June 2015. The announcement was made during the latest episode of John Gruber’s podcast, The Talk Show. “We just passed over 11 million Apple Music subscribers, and all of those people live in a world where music is in the cloud,” said Cue. “I think we’re going to see more and more customers.”
Why is it so impressive that Apple Music has reached 11 million subscribers in seven months? It’s a feat that took Spotify six years to achieve.
The original Internet Radio, Pandora, is struggling to keep up as Apple Music and Spotify make it easier for users to access music where they want, when they want. The company is still the most successful if judging the different streaming platforms by user numbers, but growth has slowed to the point that the company is considering selling.
Apple Music offers a 3-month trial subscription, before users are invited to upgrade for $9.99 a month to access curated lists of artists, songs, albums and stations. The service is available on both Apple products and Android devices.
