Why do we like this?

Last night, the great English singer-songwriter Sam Smith came to San Francisco's The Rickshaw Stop for a very small and intimate show.  Even Sam Smith commented how small the venue was and how he modified his set to take advantage of the quaint stage.

It was only a few days ago that Sam Smith was on a massive stage in front of tens of thousands of people laying down "Latch" with his mates Disclosure down at Coachella.  I consider myself quite lucky to have seen the amazing singer twice in one week, and in two completely different settings.  Will I see him for a third time tonight as a special guest for Disclosure's show at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA?  Fingers crossed for the trifecta.

Starting just after 11pm to an eager and attentive crowd, Sam Smith and his band took the stage.  His band was comprised of a guitarist, cellist, and pianist -- keeping it classy.  On a side note, while I really enjoy Sam Smith on "Latch" and "La La La," I have to admit that Sam Smith's original music is not my typical style or choice of genre.  With that being said, Sam Smith and his band caught me completely off guard last night, and were amazing live.

His voice, as you could imagine, was beyond stellar and Grammy-worthy.  Well, he has already won a BRIT award, so go figure.  In-between songs, Sam would engage in some friendly banter, explaining what the next song was about or responding to random questions from the crowd.  At a young age of 21, this guy is a true class act.  My only negative comment (how could you even have one about Sam Smith?) was how short the set was.  The duration of the show was only about about 35-40 mintutes, which was a downer.  At any rate, Sam Smith and his band gave me a greater appreciation for his music, and look forward to seeing and hearing more of him soon - maybe tonight at the Disclosure show!?

Be sure to catch Sam Smith while he's on tour, if  it's not already soldout!  Click here for tour dates.
