Back in July, I had the pleasure of reviewing Australian singer-songwriter Cleopold, and thought the Aussie sounded fantastically similar to Matthew Jordan Hemerlein, better known as Lo-Fang.
It didn't occur to me that we hadn't previously reviewed the impressive latter multi-instrumentalist. We need to rectify this now!
I was introduced to Lo-Fang last year when I saw him open up for Lorde at Austin Music Hall. Not a bad introduction, if you ask me. (Earlier, the bewitching Lorde named Hemerlein's track "#88" as her second favorite song of 2013. True story.)
I was immediately taken with the creative, melancholy songs coming from this classically trained musician. I selected "When We're Fire" because I've been hung up on it for weeks.
Lo-Fang's work is alluring, simmering, and sexy. His sound pairs well with a rich red wine. I have a high school crush on his sleepy, aloof vocals. The synths and sounds that pillow his words make me (and you?) move in mysterious ways.
Enjoy. Keep this gentleman on your radar.
