The more I interview bands, the more I become fascinated by each artist’s creative timeline. Some musicians and bands can crank out albums and EPs like clockwork, an album every two years and a few singles to hold us over in between. Others, like the worldly Phoenix, take their sweet time, unfazed by hungry record labels and fans. They work quietly for years before a new sound is shared.
Chitown’s singer/songwriter Erik Hall falls into the latter category. The founding member of NOMO dedicated four years to his sophomore release, Driver. It was released earlier this year and is truly a labor of love.
Hall first debuted his solo-project, In Tall Buildings, in late 2009. His delicate sound was well received then, and continues to leave critics buzzing.
“Unmistakable” is a faint, weightless track. A song so gentle that I politely held my exhales so my breath didn’t overpower Hall’s arresting whispers. I envision his songs like strange, rare fruits that he spent years inspecting, showering with light and love, until they were ripe enough to share. “Unmistakable” grew and matured. You can feel it.
Hall’s ghostly sound will ease into playlists with the likes of Pinback, Band of Horses, Jose Gonzalez, and Gotye.
