Why do we like this?
I've known eLan for years. The Inglewood native has been up to no good on production since before I met him in 2004, when we were both studying at UC San Diego. Initially making beats on Fruity Loops before switching to an MPC 1000, eLan was on his boom-bap shit heavy. A few years later he started experimenting with keyboards and other musical equipment, and started branching out a bit.
He started to bore off the constraints of "rap beats" and started messing around with melody a bit more. The emphasis shifted from the drums to the synthesizers, and after spending years in an arena he was very familiar with, eLan suddenly found himself in new terrain. This proved to be for the best; he connected with the guys from Modeselektor and inked a deal with their Monkey Town records, which resulted in three projects that got a beautiful vinyl treatment as well as a tour of Europe. Now back in Los Angeles, he's cooking up that next move.
One day, while chatting online, the subject of remixing came up. I forget if he asked me for input or if I volunteered my opinion without request, but I suggested he remix astronaut rapper Future. I thought Future's emphasis on melody and cadence would be an interesting fit over eLan's rumbling synth lines. I didn't think much of the conversation but a week or two later I perused his SoundCloud and found this remix of Future's collaboration with ex-Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland. I think it came out pretty well! Now if I could only get ahold of some of Future's mixtape acapellas for the homie"¦
