Why do we like this?
While Beyonce's out-the-blue album is already legendary, my favorite unannounced release of 2013 is Flying Lotus' decision to leak about two dozen demos and roughs out to the world, aptly named Ideas+drafts+loops.
This also leads me to another point: I am a chronic demo-lover. I love listening to rough ideas, and in several instances I will prefer them to the finished version. In my opinion, there are times when the visceral impact is minimized by the mixing and mastering process. I've been lucky enough to have heard FlyLo roughs before, and I've usually always connected with them as much or more than the finished version.
Also, like we can glimpse on today's track, FlyLo experiments way more than his official releases would indicate. "An Xbox Killed My Dog," besides having an amazing title, may be a bit puzzling to some fans. No otherworldly effects or surreal moods, just a killer loop played out over nearly three minutes. Can anyone spot the sample please?
