Hot off the heels of
Bonnaroo, my soul is craving
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. I only made it to the Which Stage for the tail end of their Sunday set, but it was enough to remind me why I allow this band into my heart time and time again, whether it be through
remixes of songs off their latest,
Here (which have served as a delightful dessert to follow that 2012 release) or their screen-stealing time in the documentary
Big Easy Express (in which Alex Ebert, Jade and Co. hop on a train with Mumford & Sons and Old Crowe Medicine Show -- check it out if it happened to slide past your radar).
Lately, it's stripped-down tracks from their first record that have been pulling my heartstrings, like this oldie but goodie iTunes Sessions gem. While the original rides on stomps and echos that force your body back and forth, this version lightly rests itself on delicate keys while Ebert's commanding -- but not domineering -- vocal performance takes on a whole new level of passion, despite the toned-down nature of this live version. Jade's exquisite voice takes charge for a verse or two, reminding us of stand-out tracks like "
Fiya Wata," on which she truly becomes the girl of the hour.
If you happen to be in Chicago this Friday, you can hear the band's janglin' songs at the Old St. Pat's Church Block Party, which will surely attract about a diverse a crowd as any successful indie band today could draw.
