This is a joke. Two years ago I was drooling over Cid Rim and Okmalumkoolkat. Now I'm writing about a premiere of a Cid Rim remix of Okmalumkoolkat's group Dirty Paraffin. It seems as if our globe is shrinking, or, more likely, the electronic music scene is growing.
In probably the smartest move by a label ever, Austria's Affine Records have taken on South Africa's finest and begun to grow him overseas. I recently had the pleasure of going raucous to OK at Rocking the Daisies, a goliath festival based an hour from Cape Town. This guy is as good live as it gets, and is actually even more entertaining to watch than just listening via the internet. As someone who isn't huge about watching, but rather prefers to DJ and then block my ears, this is saying something.
Had you told me two years ago that Cid Rim and Okmalumkoolkat would be linking up on tracks and remixing one another, I probably would have spit my beer out, slapped you and called your mother and inform her she raised a liar. Thank God you didn't tell me this two years ago, as this write up would have been one huge apology.
Now I urge you all to go listen to everything else by Oklmalukoolkat that you can find, but also go and seek out other South African artists who are shaping the electronic music scene down here. I'll give you few names: Card On Spokes, Maramza, Jumping Back Slash, Thor Rixon, to name a few.
