Hot Soup was a slept-on gem in Danny Brown's discography. Only die-hards knew of his initial efforts to reconcile his 'hood influences with his experimental aspirations. Thanks to underground ambassador DJ House Shoes and his Street Corner Music label, the mixtape made mostly over a 4th of July weekend years ago is getting a proper vinyl, CD and digital release.
If you were in the know in 2008, "Whatupdoe" was Danny's first breakthrough. Nick Speed slowed down a Juan Atkins sample into a slow burning loop and Danny began a long trajectory of saying some of the most insanely entertaining shit on record. Though it was standard rapper fare -- being in the club, shooting people outside the club, smoking weed -- his lyricism and charisma elevated the track into something of a regional underground hit.
