When it comes to Swedish hip-hop, I'm not ashamed to say my knowledge is pretty limited. Like most rap listeners, I'm aware of Yung Lean and his Sad Boys crew (I'm actually a big fan), and have recently stumbled upon Ängie, who's like a more rebellious version of Lean.
Today I'm happy to say I've found another Swedish rapper who might be on the right path to stardom, even if I'm not quite sure what she's saying.
Like Lean and Ängie, BONBON hails from Stockholm and is following in the DIY footsteps of her successful peers. As she states on her website, BONBON produced, wrote, and recorded her latest track, "SÄG TILL HAN," in her room, having self-taught herself how to produce.
While I have no idea what she's rapping about, "SÄG TILL HAN" had me from the opening, as BONBON breathes heavily over a beat not to dissimilar to The Streets' "Blinded ByThe Lights."
There's a focus to her delivery that had me bopping along, and I can't say I've ever heard Swedish sound so alluring. Props must also go to BONBON for the beat that floats somewhere between a computer game soundtrack and dark industrial electronica.
I'm really keen on seeing what BONBON has in store going forward, but until then, you can hear more of her tracks here.
