Okay, this is just weird. No, not the title (though it may be the longest one in Indie Shuffle history). What's weird is this band approached me about some publicity, but made no mention they had a Kevin Saunderson remix under their belt! Hello! I'm like, Indie Shuffle's voice for Detroit! I live to cover these things, and Saunderson is one of the originators of Detroit techno!
It's so impressive they got him on a remix. Actually, now I'm feeling a bit embarrassed I wasn't in the loop on this one, but Saunderson does keep such a low profile, and in all fairness I don't even know what he's up to these days, (besides this) -- but I'm rambling.
Personal pride aside, I'm now entirely intrigued by Austra. They're a Toronto based band; the brainchild of Katie Stelmanis originally, it now includes members Maya Postepski and Dorian Wolf. The music is like experimental lo-fi electronic indie with a techno attitude. It's raw, dark, and gritty, yet has this ethereal, Renaissance-era quality to it that I just love.
Furthermore, I'm all for genre bridges being built, so it's super exciting to me that they are creating pop influenced by house and techno. I believe I've stumbled on some kindred spirits!
"Home" is taken from their latest album Olympia, available now via Domino Record Co. They're in the middle of an extensive tour so check those dates. Hopefully you can catch them in your hometown.
