Why do we like this?
City of Angels resident Ryan York has released a compilation of songs for free download entitled Unreleasables, from label Non Projects (official site here). York, who produces as Asura, has this to say about the ominously titled Unreleasables:
A clear stand out from Unreleasables is "He Sees On Through Her" (Real). The song starts off slow and viscous, building to an undercurrent of looped baritone vocals. Wailing, glitchy sampled cries take over as it progresses, yielding stratified magical harmonies. This is the type of song you play at the end of a hot summer's eve to prepare for darkness to invade and adventures to begin. Immediately following is a remix of Outkast's "Da Art Of Story Telling" which is dark, pensive, and delightfully well-rounded.
Drake makes the cut with a remix of "Over" on the album as well. With all the tracks, one or two feel a little rushed and overly intense without means to a polished end. But, overall Unreleasables is an awesome score for a free download and stylistically something we may not see again from York, so no major complaints here.
To download Unreleasables head to the Non Projects' Bandcamp site.
"Introducing Unreleasables, a bunch of music I'm never going to put out due to legal/artistic/motivation issues. mostly from the summer of 2010, a fine summer for us all for sure. Featuring "Pocket Hearts" for download for the first time and a mighty fine "Drake" track. Please enjoy, won't be hearing much else like this in the future... from these quarters." - Ryan
