Sounds like:
Joanna Newsom,
Beak,
Portishead
Why do we like this?
I came across this delightful little cover of Ray Davies' "I Go To Sleep" only yesterday while watching Christopher Honore’s Beloved. It’s from Anika, a Berlin-based indie songstress who presents her soft yet spirited vocals against grain rock.
Anika’s got an interesting story: she was originally a political journalist who switched careers after meeting Geoff Barrow of Portishead fame. Since then, she’s been making what Last.fm writes is a mix of "post-punk, avant garde, and dub." I think I'm in love.
This song's from 2011, and there's no news on future releases to be found. If you're hungry for more Anika, check Stones Throw's site.
