Although I was born in 1998 (just on the cusp of the new millennium), I've always been a '90s music junkie. Naturally that means I’m a huge fan of Nirvana, along with countless other people. When I find a new cover or version of a Nirvana song, it’s always interesting to see other artists’ spins on the iconic band and how they can completely transform their sound into something different.
That’s exactly what Amber Mark did with this rendition of “Heart-Shaped Box.” This cover adds much more pop and synth, totally changing the genre. The song went from classic garage rock into a soul and R&B tune. Mark’s powerful vocals flow organically as she lets it all out whenever she belts out.
But at the start of the chorus, when the lyrics “Hey! / Wait! / I've got a new complaint / Forever in debt to your priceless advice” start, you can still hear that it’s a Nirvana song at the core.
We all know Kurt Cobain when we hear him, but I never would have thought to rearrange this song as fervently and rhythmically as Mark did.
