Why do we like this?
Alsarah and The Nubatones have crafted a powerful piece of music with their Silt album. With a retro sound and modern sensibilities, the group crafted music that is both politically rich and heavily musical. According to a release:
"Entirely produced by Alsarah, she describes the sound of Silt as "East African Retro Pop" - which harkens back to the hazy sounds of 1960s and 70s Nubian music combined with Eastern instrumentation, soaring vocal melodies and pentatonic arrangements. The album is firmly rooted in the Nubian "Songs of Return" that began to spring up after mass displacement and resettlement of hundred of thousands of people in the region of lower Nubia that went under water after Egypt built the Aswan high Dam to control the flooding of the Nile in the 1970s. The focus of these songs, both thematically and lyrically is about a return to home and the beauty of home."
"Soukura (It's Late)" is an infectious tune that blends funk, percussion, and folk, and paired with Alsarah's sweet vocals, it takes the listener on an enjoyable trip. Don't sleep!
