I just got back from Rocking The Daisies, South Africa's biggest music festival. As expected, I'm a little exhausted, but overall pretty stoked to have seen acts like The Cat Empire and Milky Chance.
While those big bands were cool, there's pretty much just oneperformancethat managed to blow my mind:Alice Phoebe Lou. I'd heard her name numerous times, including when hanging out with the boys from Stereofox (who recorded an awesome session with Alice on a Berlin rooftop and had nothing but praise for her). And through all that, I'd never given Alicea proper chance.
Flash forward (or backwards) to Saturday morning at 11am, as a crowded group of hungover festival-goers gathered under the clouds in front of the main stage. You could tell that folks were excited to be a part of what was about to happen, and indeed their expectations weren't misplaced.
What followed was anhour of the most-perfect morning music I've heard in ages. Alongside band-mate Matteo, Alice carried the crowd through easy-going jazz melodies, crooning with perfect pitch over delicate and intricate instrumentation. When it call came together for"Berlin Blues" at the end, the audiencehad undergone a transformation from sleepy dreamers intoenergized participants -- exactly the master plan Alice seemed to have in mind.
Basically, if you're in Berlin, try find her (she can often be found buskingon the streets). And if you're not in Berlin, this may be a good reason to visit.
